Destination Fiordland

with Surrey Court Motel

Fiordland National Park is New Zealands largest. Maori named the area Ata Whenua, the Shadow Lands

Access is either through Tuatapere or Manapouri and Te Anau. The Fiords themselves are accessible by car only at Milford Sound, although you can visit Doubtful Sound via boat across Lake Manapouri, and then bus over the Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound. The rest of the Fiords …… yes, it is confusing, as they are Fiords, but are named “Sounds” …. are accessible on foot… several days walking, or by aircraft or boat.

But don’t let that put you off. Fiordland is magnificent and there are lots of access points from the eastern side roads, with many many walks from a few minutes to several days. There are many tour operators active servicing the Park, and they will have something that suits you. Or, do your own thing. Either way, Fiordland is memorable.
